New To Vaping

If you’re new to vaping or you’re considering switching from tobacco cigarettes to electronic cigarettes (vaping), this page should serve as a brief guide to help you understand what vaping is all about and highlight the benefits of making the switch.

To help you make sense of vaping terminology, we’ve created a glossary of terms commonly used by vapers – these terms are used throughout our website – so please click on any highlighted words you’re unsure of to find out their meaning.

Is Vaping Safe?

In a recent report by the PHE (Public Health England), it was stated that vaping is “around 95% less harmful to health than smoking... ” [Click here to read the report]. As vaping is a relatively new technology and there are a lack of long-term studies, it will be some time before its long-term effects on health can be properly established.

Most medical and scientific experts who’ve studied vaping are of the opinion that it’s much less harmful than smoking. However, we don’t advise anyone who isn’t already a smoker to take up vaping. When long-term studies are published, we’re confident that they’ll back up what so many of us are certain of – that vaping is very safe.

Vaping Basics

Despite being a relatively new technology, new developments are taking place all the time. These advances are constantly improving and refining vaping technology, so it’s safe to say that the vaping devices on the market at the moment are far more advanced, and also deliver better vaping experiences, than the devices available just a few years ago. Here are three things that you’ll need to get started vaping:

battery

A Battery – Vaping batteries are either supplied with a charger or have a built-in charging port.

Tank

A Tank – The part that contains the e-liquid, the tank also contains the heating coil (atomiser) that vaporises the e-liquid.

Bottle

A Bottle – A bottle of e-liquid. E-liquids come in a variety of nicotine strengths, flavours and sizes. Nicotine free (0mg) e-liquids are also available.

Vaping Devices

Here are two tried and tested vaping devices to get you started. If you’d like to move up to a more advanced device later on, look on YouTube and vaper forums.

New to Vaping

eGo-T

The eGo-T CE4 – This vaping device comes with everything you need (except e-liquid) to start vaping. As these devices have been around for a while, you can pick one up quite cheaply.

Pros

  • An affordable vaping device that’s great for beginners
  • Lightweight materials and its small size make it easy to carry
  • A similar action to smoking a traditional tobacco cigarette
Cons
  • A lower vapour production compared to larger devices
  • A limited battery capacity and no options to upgrade
  • Its use is limited to tank liquids (up to 50% VG Max)

Summary
A great beginner’s vaping device that’s small in size and lightweight, making it easy to carry in your pocket. It’s advisable to buy 2–3 batteries so you can rotate them.

A More Advanced Option

Subox Mini

The Kangertech Subox Mini Kit – Once you’ve comfortably switched to e-cigarettes, this is a great device to upgrade to. Offering more power and a more satisfying vaping experience, this device is compatible with high VG (Cloud Chaser) e-liquids that enhance vapour production and give less of a throat hit.

Pros

  • An upgradeable device with higher power and battery capacity/li>
  • Produces more vapour and delivers a more satisfying flavour
  • Its front mounted USB charge port can recharge whilst vaping
  • Suitable for both tank and Cloud Chaser e-liquids
Cons
  • More expensive, but has a longer lifespan
  • A heavier vaping device, but still easily portable

Summary
A great device to upgrade to from the eGo. It comes with an instruction booklet to help you make good use of its features. As you need to purchase an 18650 battery, we recommend the Samsung 25r 18650. Please note that non-high drain batteries are unsuitable for this device.

Eliquid

Once you’ve decided upon a device, you’ll need some e-liquid. E-liquids consist of four main ingredients: Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerin (VG), flavouring and nicotine. We also supply nicotine-free (0mg) e-liquids.

Propylene Glycol – This component delivers the flavour by soaking it up and taking it through the vapour produced. PG has a stronger throat hit than Vegetable Glycerin.

Vegetable Glycerin – This component creates the vapour, so the higher the VG content, the cloudier the vapour. VG is naturally sweet and it’s smoother than PG.

Flavouring – Herbal Tides e-liquids are made of unique, high-quality blends of food grade flavourings. All our flavourings are made in the US and are diacetyl free.

Nicotine – We use pharmaceutical-grade nicotine to produce our e-liquids. E-liquids come in a variety of nicotine strengths, so please use the table below as a guide.

0mg

(0mg/ml - 0.0% nicotine)
“Cold Turkey”
Popular among vapers who’ve already cut out nicotine but desire the vaping effect, along with vapers reducing their nicotine intake with the aim of quitting altogether.

3mg

(3mg/ml - 0.3% nicotine)
“Cloud Chaser”
This is an ultra-low strength e-liquid that allows vapers to vape more frequently without getting that light headed feeling.

6mg

(6mg/ml - 0.6% nicotine)
“Low”
Intended for less than 20 a day smokers. 6mg is the most common nicotine strength as it provides a nicotine hit without overpowering the flavour of the e-liquid.

12mg

(12mg/ml - 1.2% nicotine)
“Medium”
Intended for 20–30 a day smokers. This nicotine strength delivers a strong nicotine hit, so we recommend it for smokers making the switch to vaping.

18mg

(18mg/ml - 1.8% nicotine)
“High”
Intended for 30+ a day smokers. As this nicotine strength is very strong, we recommend it only for cigar smokers and very heavy cigarette smokers.

E-Liquid Types

Tank e-liquids and Cloud Chasers are the two main e-liquid types. The difference between them is the Propylene Glycol to Vegetable Glycerin ratio – ‘PG/VG Ratio’.

Tank E-liquids – E-liquids with either a 50:50 PG/VG mix or a higher PG content. These e-liquids provide a full flavour and a medium strength throat hit.

Cloud Chasers – E-liquids with a higher VG content than tank e-liquids. These e-liquids are thicker and produce much more vapour than tank e-liquids. Please note they’re only suitable for specific devices, like the Kangertech Subox, but not the eGo.

Sensitivity

Some users are sensitive to propylene glycol, which may cause a sore throat. If this occurs, stop use and switch to a high VG or Cloud Chaser e-liquid.

Your First Vape

Once you have everything you need, we recommend switching to vaping first thing in the morning so you’ll have been without a cigarette for around eight hours, plus you’ll have time to charge your vaping device’s batteries. To get started, juice up the tank, hit the button and inhale. Welcome to your new lease on life.

Propylene Glycol

– This is mainly your flavour carrier, it soaks up the flavours and combines with the molecules, taking them through into the vapour produced. Propylene Glycol has a stronger throat hit than Vegetable Glycerin, which helps mimic the effect on the throat of smoking a cigarette.

RBA/RDA/RTA

- An atomiser that allows you to ‘build’ your own heating coil. For advanced users only.

SubOhm

~ Sub-Ohming

Throat hit

- Refers to the sensation a vaper gets when inhaling from and e-cigarette.

Variable Power

Vegetable Glycerin

– This is the component that creates the vapour, and lots of it! The higher the VG content, the more cloudy your vapour production will be. VG is also naturally sweet, so brings a sweetness to the eliquid. VG is also much smoother on the throat, compared to PG.
